The Challenge
My task for this project is to design a logo for an international city that captures its unique spirit, rich culture, vibrant arts, and deep-rooted history—all while reflecting its modern identity. The challenge was to distill the city's complexity into a simple, memorable mark that resonates with locals and extends a warm, welcoming impression to visitors.
The Solution
After exploring the city's rich art, music, and cultural history, I discovered the strong presence of classical patterns and decorative elements, especially in its ironwork and baroque design. Inspired by these details, I created a logo that blends Salzburg's historical charm with a modern, welcoming feel—something that reflects the city's identity while connecting with both locals and visitors.

The Finalists

option 1:
Salzburger Stierwascher
I chose the bull as a symbol for Salzburg because of the Salzburger Stierwascher tradition, which represents the city's strength, cleverness, and pride. The legend tells of locals who tricked their enemies during a siege by parading the same bull, painted differently each day, to make it look like they had plenty of food. The clever plan worked, and the bull became a lasting symbol of the city's resilience.
To connect the logo even more to Salzburg, I included the shape of the city's mountains within the body of the bull. This adds a sense of place and highlights the natural beauty that surrounds the city, tying together its history and landscape in one simple, meaningful image.

option 2:
Sound of Alpine
Inspired by Salzburg's iconic mountains and rich musical heritage, this logo blends nature and art into one elegant symbol. The mountain range forms the beam between two eighth notes—a subtle nod to the city’s rhythm and legacy.
Salzburg is the home to Mozart and the Salzburg Festival, the city lives and breathes music. This logo captures that spirit by uniting Salzburg's natural beauty with its cultural soundscape.
Whether seen as a musical motif or a geographic silhouette, the logo resonates with both locals and global admirers of Salzburg's unique identity'

option 3:
Edelwiss
The edelweiss represents rarity, resilience, and a quiet kind of elegance. In the 19th century, the flower came to symbolize an alpine paradise—an escape from the skepticism and rapid urbanization of Europe's growing cities.
Salzburg Known for its breathtaking landscapes and deep musical roots, it's the birthplace of Mozart, home to world-renowned music festivals, and the backdrop of The Sound of Music. Music notes are subtley integrated into the design of the flower—blending nature and creativity, tradition and expression.
Final Decision

The final decision was Salzburger Stierwascher. The Bull is a central symbol, drawing from the city's storied past and cultural heritage. The legend of the "Stierwascher" (bull washers) dates back to the 16th century, during a time when Salzburg was besieged. With food supplies dwindling, the city's defenders employed a clever ruse: they paraded a single bull, painted in different colors each day, to deceive their enemies into believing they had ample resources. This act of ingenuity not only saved the city but also gave rise to the nickname "Stierwascher" for Salzburg's residents.
To honor this legend, I designed a stylized bull logo that seamlessly integrates the silhouette of Salzburg's iconic mountains within its form. This fusion symbolizes the city's resilience, strategic brilliance, and deep connection to its natural landscape. The mountain contours within the bull's body serve as a subtle yet powerful reminder of Salzburg's enduring strength and the cleverness that defines its people.
Incorporating the natural brown color of the original bull, with its distinctive white spots, adds authenticity and a direct link to the legend. This color choice not only reflects the historical accuracy of the story but also grounds the design in the rich cultural heritage of Salzburg.
