the challenge

My task for this project is to design a logo for an international city that captures its unique spirit, rich culture, vibrant arts, and deep-rooted history—all while reflecting its modern identity. The challenge was to distill the city's complexity into a simple, memorable mark that resonates with locals and extends a warm, welcoming impression to visitors.

the solution

After exploring the city's rich art, music, and cultural history, I discovered the strong presence of classical patterns and decorative elements, especially in its ironwork and baroque design. Inspired by these details, I created a logo that blends Salzburg's historical charm with a modern, welcoming feel—something that reflects the city's identity while connecting with both locals and visitors.

The Finalists

Final Decision

Salzburg Bull logo

The final decision was Salzburger Stierwascher. The Bull is a central symbol, drawing from the city's storied past and cultural heritage. The legend of the "Stierwascher" (bull washers) dates back to the 16th century, during a time when Salzburg was besieged. With food supplies dwindling, the city's defenders employed a clever ruse: they paraded a single bull, painted in different colors each day, to deceive their enemies into believing they had ample resources. This act of ingenuity not only saved the city but also gave rise to the nickname "Stierwascher" for Salzburg's residents.

To honor this legend, I designed a stylized bull logo that seamlessly integrates the silhouette of Salzburg's iconic mountains within its form. This fusion symbolizes the city's resilience, strategic brilliance, and deep connection to its natural landscape. The mountain contours within the bull's body serve as a subtle yet powerful reminder of Salzburg's enduring strength and the cleverness that defines its people.

Incorporating the natural brown color of the original bull, with its distinctive white spots, adds authenticity and a direct link to the legend. This color choice not only reflects the historical accuracy of the story but also grounds the design in the rich cultural heritage of Salzburg.
